cosmetology school question?

I have never had experience with doing hair. This week is my first week at school. I am having trouble figuring out which way to put the rollers to achieve what look and what look will come out of putting the rollers in each way. Is this normal? Should I just quit now? I don’t know if I can do this. Is it easier to work with hair on a real person than the dolls you use at school? Also, I am going to mitchell’s academy (they have the salons at the mall. All in all, is that a good school?
The instructor explains everything to us, but It just seems like I am not getting it.

Oh, sweetheart, it’s your very first week and you’re thinking of giving up?! Stop it right now!! You can do ANYTHING you set your mind to do.

With no previous hair experience this industry can seem overwhelming at the start. You are in the right place, though. Most states require a cosmetologist to complete 1,000 to 1,500 hours of training before they can be licensed to practice. You will learn so much in that time frame that in six months you’ll have removed all your self-doubt.

I’m sure your school is excellent. The most important thing for you to remember is that your instructors are there for you – to help you through the entire process. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for extra one-on-one time if you feel like you just aren’t getting it. Your tuition pays their salary and they are there to help you!!

Yes, hair on a real person is a bit easier to work with, but we all had to start on those silly mannequins. That doll head allows you to learn without ravaging a live person’s tender scalp. Take advantage of your only client that will never be disappointed, upset, or cranky with you! In due time, they will transition you to working on real people and it will get easier as you learn.

If you are questioning your choice of school… are they accredited by any professional organizations? If you answer yes, you are most likey in a great school that will provide you top-notch, current education and likely offer placement assistance as you near your completion date.

There will be many more days that you are frusterated to the point of calling it quits, but remember anything worth having is worth working for. And, a career in the beauty industry can be profitable and truly rewarding. You have the chance to make someone’s day every time you get behind your chair!

Don’t give up! I know you can do it!!!
